Welcome, New Teachers

When I was new, I peered at the sky,
I penned out wishes and dreams,
I looked at the room and I made my plans,
When I was new, that did I.
When I was more seasoned, I noticed some clouds,
I discarded the too-lofty goals,
My rose-colored glasses showed smudges and smears,
When I was more seasoned: new doubts.
When I was an expert, I chewed on my worry,
I negotiated how I could still win,
I started to complain about what they didn’t love,
When I was an expert, I buried.
When my wishes had failed and the light lost its glow,
I reflected on how it didn’t work,
If I had to redo it, what would I do instead?
When I was new, I just didn’t know.
